Stay tuned. Update on Carolyn Hill’s hearing coming soon.

The Philadelphia Department of Human Services has once again stacked the deck against Carolyn Hill, a low-income Black single mother, by preventing all but one of her 12 witnesses from testifying, and objecting every time she tried to mention the brutal and possibly illegal removal of her nieces from her care two years ago as she was in the process of adopting them. DHS has been trying to prevent the truth from coming out, denying she was pre-adoptive and bonded with the girls, arrogantly ignoring the extended family’s wishes, inventing false allegations against her, and using her lack of a high school diploma or GED – like about half of adults in Philadelphia,– as grounds to stop her from adopting the girls.    Read the full court report here.

Court report: Carolyn Hill’s adoption hearing, June 11

(Because Family Courts in Philadelphia are closed – press or public are not in the hearings – there is no public scrutiny and we are unable to report what happened inside except in broad terms. Other cities have opened their courts, making children safer because of public access.)

June 11, 2014  Adoption Hearing, Family Court, Judge Olszewski, 1801 Vine St. Courtroom K

Once again Carolyn Hill’s attempt to adopt her nieces, to be heard and defend herself from the lies of a bureaucracy organized against her, was thwarted by the Department of Human Services (DHS) lawyers which moved to prevent all but one of her 12 witnesses from testifying and objected to any mention of DHS’s unjust and possibly illegal removal of her nieces that started the separation two years ago.  Ms Hill is a low income Black single mother.

The judge will rule Friday.  Please call or fax the court officials to object to this further injustice before it’s too late.  Names, contact info, and talking points hereOr send to us and we will forward: philly@allwomencount.net.

“Children are only supposed to be removed from a home if they are in imminent danger.  There was never a charge of danger two years ago when they took my nieces who everyone agreed were doing well with me and who I was in the process of adopting” said Carolyn Hill who has been fighting to get them back ever since and who, for the first time, was allowed to address the court.  DHS has objected to Ms Hill’s lack of a high school diploma, made false allegations to the court about supposed mental health, cognitive, housing and drug issues, deceived the court by acting like she was not pre-adoptive and is now supporting a better off, more distant relative by marriage in adopting the children.  Ms Hill’s pro-bono lawyer, Samuel Stretton, fought for her rights but three lawyers were opposing her bid for adoption at the June 11 hearing.
